The printed edition of the book is black & white and has a well-liked spiral binding that lets the book lie flat or be folded back on itself.
The eBook edition of the book, available as an instant download or on a CD disc, is a printable and searchable full-color version of the same book in Adobe's popular PDF format. You can print it out in whole or part in high resolution, and read it on a PC or Mac using the free Acrobat Reader, or any up-to-date Web browser. This eBook also includes clickable links to 50 or so animations, movies and other resources that illustrate the core concepts of digital photography such as exposure compensation, lens focal lengths, histograms, and much, much more. (To use these animations you do need an Internet connection.)
Just some of the things you'll learn in this book are how to take pictures in fully automatic point and shoot mode and how your camera captures digital images; how to play back and manage your images; how to use buttons, dials, and menus; control image size and quality; use all of the camera's exposure modes and exposure controls to get photos that show the scene exactly as it is, or as you want to interpret it; use histograms for the best possible exposures; see how to control sharpness in your photographs; and how to use focus, depth-of-field, sharpness, softness, and blur creatively. Learn all about light and color and how to take advantage of them. Understand how they change throughout the day and seasons, how they're affected by the weather, and how light's direction and quality affects highlights and shadows. See how to set white balance to capture colors the way you see them. Learn how to use your zoom lens creatively when photographing scenery, interiors, people, and very small subjects. See how to creatively use the built in, and optional external flash, indoors and out and in good light and bad, and how to use studio lighting for product shots and portraits. Explore little known but essential flash techniques such as fill and slow sync flash. Finally, see how to capture panoramas, use continuous photography and capture movies with sound; control the tonal range, capture movies; customize the camera to better suit your shooting style; and much, much more.

Where to begin? Perhaps with the convenience of a spiral binding that permits folding the book at the needed page. Or the easy to understand in-depth detail that defines every one of the many features of this great camera, all the while explaining the basics of photography in logical format. Having taken beginning and intermediate photography courses at a community college, I find that Mr. Curtin explains pretty much everything I learned, (and then some, because that was for film SLR photography.) Today's digital cameras require file details such as RAW and JPEG, amply covered herein. The Canon PowerShot S90 is an amazing camera. It offers most of the SLR photography features I'm seeking in a compact, lightweight instrument. It could be daunting to face those dials and menus, but this book explains each one in such a simple way that I was off & running with my new camera immediately. It's a joy to grab the book & try something new. Perhaps my only complaint is that the book, itself, wasn't printed in color. I use it as a field guide and don't want to drag a laptop and disk along just to see the b/w photos in crisp, colorful detail. The book would have been worth paying an additional amount for upgraded printing.

A Short Course in Canon PowerShot S90 Photography book/ebook Dennis P Curtin 9781928873945 Books Reviews
This is a well-written, easy to understand "missing manual." I like the camera a lot, even more with this book.
It's unfortunate that the book's photos are in poor quality B&W but the CD has color. And that's the only negative. The book is clear & complete; it provides technical insight in general for the many variables and aspects of picture taking and then describes how the incredible variations of the S90's controls can make it happen.
This is an excellent book and disk, well worth the money. For the novice (or old hand needing a refresher), it does a very good jobs of covering basic photographic principles and how to apply them. For the S90 owner, it is a wonderful guide to the camera's controls. The S90 is a very flexible camera whose small package belies a wealth of possibilities. In many ways it's more like a DSLR than a typical pocket camera. So it is well the worth the time to explore its capabilities. Spending some time with this guide is probably more effective than taking a class. The writing and organization is accessible and clear.
This is a good book on photography. Yes on photography in general. it has specific information in the use of the Canon s90, that is true, and it is a book on the canon s90. But, it has general information on the nature of photographing that applies to any camera or situation, with the Canon s90 in as a bonus.
It is written so straight frowardly that it can be read from cover to cover and hold our interest. If you have an s90 near you, then you can check its function from time to time as you read.
although I did not use the computer from which to read this book, if you do, then you can click on many areas to have points illustrated in a multimedia manner.
It is bound by a continuos ring and thus the pages can be turned over 360 degrees, making reading easy.
I highly recommend this book for your Canon s90 powershot and you will learn a lot about our camera and more about photography in general. it may be the only book to get if you want to get only one book for your hobby and you have an s90 camera. of course you can always learn more.
This book is really cool in a lot of ways. 160 pages of photography tips all about the Canon Powershot s90. It walks you through all the features that people normally don't use, and explains how you can use the different features to control photo stuff like exposure, sharpness, depth of field and so on. Also a good general primer on photography if you're new to it like me. In a way, it's the perfect complementary book because the S90 is also a great step-up camera for budding shutterbugs.
But! The book is also a waste of money. What you get for $36 is a black-and-white printout of the e-book PDF, spiral bound. It looks like what you could do at the office or at kinko's, except it's $36! And black and white - what's the point?! The e-book contains some gorgeous color photos that clearly illustrate how you can take great photos with the camera. But all of this information is lost when you have a plain b&w photocopy!
My advice - you can download the PDF of this book at [...] for only $20. Then you can print yourself a copy, if you want a hardcopy.
Two stars, because while the printed book is lame, the content looks kinda interesting. I'm going to buy the PDF. As an aside, shipped me the book in a box that was a little too small, so it got all bent up. Don't do that.
